How do you explain baby making to a child who doesnt speak English>????

Now Im scared..My son Biruk just asked me "MOM..where is da baby first before stomach"? YIKES!!!!!! He asked me if he had a baby in his stomach...oh man.......I told him I had to go to the bathroom...I need to answer hima nd not make a big deal out of it..I know this..but I cant exactly explain with the sensitivity that this subject requires because there is a language barrier....I cant act it out because that would be vulgar.....HELPPPPPPPPP

OMG- I hate to laugh but I am...I do not envy you now....

I dont have advice, but if it were me, I would try to make it honest and simple..that when a Mommy and Daddy love each other, they sometimes wish really hard to have a baby and it grows inside a Mommy's stomach untill its ready to come out a and Sometimes other Mommies love the baby even more, like you , and become the new mommies even though the babies were never in their bellies

I found this article on line, maybe it can give you some reassurance and ideas of what to say.

The trick to having this conversation is to do more listening than talking. You want to say enough but not too much. Either extreme is likely to make a child uncomfortable. If you always "clam up" as soon as the topic arises, your daughter is likely to fill in the blanks as best she can (which might mean that she has some very odd or even scary ideas). On the other hand, if you launch into an overly long, overly technical explanation, you may bore her or simply confuse her, in which case she probably will again make up an explanation that makes sense to her (but might not be anything like what you thought you were saying!).

So, when she asks again about babies, start by asking her, "Where do you think they come from?" and then really listen carefully to her answer. Don't be quick to correct her, at least not until you really know what it is she is thinking.

When it comes time to explain, I think simple, honest, and straightforward answers are best. Where do babies come from? They develop inside a special place in their mommy, called a uterus. How do they get in there (assuming this is one of her many questions)? They start out as tiny cells within the mommy, and the daddy has special tiny cells called sperm. Together they make a baby.

At each stage of understanding, your child will ask for the information that she's ready to receive and understand. As long as you go at her pace, I don't think you need to worry about frightening her. After all, reproduction is truly amazing and wonderful; no fairy tale or story comes close to matching the truth.

Yes, I agree - keep it as simple as possible and let HIM guide you as to how much he really wants to know right now. No sense in you telling him all the gory details if all he's looking to hear is that "when a man and a woman love each other very much, their love sometimes makes a baby". You can get into the tiny cell thing if he asks for more but he might not.

My SIL made the mistake of giving her daughter TMI. She basically told a 4 yr old the works. Well, the poor child could not pick her jaw up off the floor nor could she wait to blab this shocking new information to the next person who would listen despite the fact that her mommy told her to keep it to herself. Sure enough, 20 minutes later they are at a hair salon and Mommy is preggo so the stylist made mention and daughter goes "Yeah, and do you know where the baby comes out from? Her VAG!NA!" Of course she whispered the beginning of the sentence and yelled the last two words. Chat Icon

OMG that story just reminded me of the movie "kindergarden cop" when the little girl said "boys have a penis and girls have a vagina" Chat Icon

Did you guys ever hear about the boy who asked his mom "Where did I come from?" Armed with all of this advice, she sat him down & explained it to him. He said "Really? Stevie is from Queens."

Well done Alicia - I'll have you over to explain it to my kids when the time comes Chat Icon

Alicia, once again you tackled a tough parent situation with intelligence and grace. You should be proud. This is tough for any parent, but being that you are a new parent, and there is a language barrier, you did great.

When he asks again, and he will, I love the advice above. Let him guide the conversation and be as honest and simple as possible.

Also, hysterical story about the girl in teh salon! Her mom should write it down and read it to her when she is older and/or getting married! How cute would that be!!
